mIDWEST V. eAST
Nick relocates to the East to experience a more exciting way of living.
-CT The Midwest is viewed as honest and pure ,while the East is considered to be corrupted and tainted. -CT That’s my Middle West . . . the street lamps and sleigh bells in the frosty dark. . . . I see now that this has been a story of the West, after all—Tom and Gatsby, Daisy and Jordan and I, were all Westerners, and perhaps we possessed some deficiency in common which made us subtly unadaptable to Eastern life. -CT The Mid West is where Nick is originally from. He moves back at the end of the book. He views it as more pure and innocent then the East.
Nick feels like east is materialistic. Tom and Daisy are both from the East. They feel entitled to all and are easily tempted by things in front of them. Nick never describes them as pure or innocent, once he gets to truly know them. Many of the characters say they were raised or previously lived in the Mid west and then moved to New York(east). It was interesting to see how their life style changed and what was pleasing to them in the east. -MH |
