"The eyes are blue and gigantic-their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a non-existant nose." E.F
Throughout the entire novel, the eyes watch down on the characters in the Valley of Ashes. It gives a sense that the roaring 20's is at a decline. That the American Dream is fake and unreal to this part of New York. E.F.

The Eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg is an ad with unblinking eyes that constantly looks down at the characters and everything that happens in the valley of ashes. It is a symbol that resembles God looking down at the characters and the moral decay of the 1920's. H.H.

George Wilson at one point brought Myrtle towards the window of their house, in sight of the Eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg, and told her that she "can't fool God". This serves as a connection to the idea that the Eyes represent God's gaze upon our world, looking down on us in disdain. JR
The Eyes may also represent God in a different way, with the idea that in America, God was slowly being replaced by capitalism. This may explain why the Eyes appear on a billboard advertisement. JR

"But above the gray land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic — their irises are one yard high. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose. Evidently some wild wag of an oculist set them there to fatten his practice in the borough of Queens, and then sank down himself into eternal blindness, or forgot them and moved away. But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paintless days, under sun and rain, brood on over the solemn dumping ground. " H.H.
The eyes are thought to be God's because the advertisement makes it feel like He's always watching from a close vicinity. TT
George Wilson strongly believes they are God's eyes although it is just an advertisement looking over the valley of ashes. TT
